Pilot Demonstrations
Microgrid
The HTWO Innovation Centre operates a state-of-the-art < 0.5 MW Hydrogen Microgrid, which has been fully functional since May 2025 and is integrated with the IITM main grid. This system utilizes a sophisticated mix of fuel cells (100 kW and 40 kW), a 10 kW Li-ion battery, and a 100 kW microgas turbine to manage energy via customized power electronics and algorithms. Designed for long-duration energy storage from renewables, the microgrid features a common DC bus architecture with advanced DC/AC converters and LCL filters. This operational demonstrator serves as a critical testbed for real-world hydrogen energy management and grid stability research.
Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS)
Tamil Nadu’s first Hydrogen Refuelling Station at IITM Thaiyur serves as the primary anchor for a dedicated Hydrogen Mobility Corridor. With a capacity of 100–150 kg/day and 350-bar filling pressure, it is designed to support cars, buses, and trucks using SAE-standard safety protocols. Currently under fabrication by M/s BTI Coopermatics, the station features indigenously manufactured high-pressure storage and advanced pre-chillers. It is on track for a May 2026 delivery to revolutionize local green transport.
Digital Twin Platform
The Digital Twin Platform optimizes hydrogen value chain performance by integrating real-time data from test rigs into three sophisticated layers: Modular, Operational, and Diagnostic. This framework allows for predictive control, enabling researchers to simulate KPIs before physical builds and monitor live operations seamlessly. By utilizing IP-protected diagnostic layers, the platform identifies potential failures and recommends fixes instantly. It bridges the gap between digital modeling and real-world techno-economic efficiency.
